Leading Wisely

alt(Colombo Lankapuvath)
Reaching the 65th milepost in a life full of events,
A path not rosy, but thorns removed without lament,
Mindful of people’s wishes, over worthless words mis-spelt,
Leaving a historic mark in the times and fate of the land,
The uphill was rugged, but not too slippery for the climb,
Gathering support from all quarters of nation’s mankind,
Trying his utmost to rise over splits, and thoughts unkind,
Uniting a nation under one flag, one purpose of mind,
Birthday and assumption of Presidency combining,
President Mahinda Rajapaksa unites Sri Lanka under one umbrella into one in a human bond as one,
To seek a path of development sans corruption and wasteful fun,
To elevate Sri Lanka to a state-noble-second to none….

Magical Mission Accomplished, Chile

E-mail Print PDF

alt(Colombo Lankapuvath) It is incorrect to say that there were 33 people trapped in the mine. There were 33 people- and God. These were the words escaping Lillian Ramirez, whose husband Mario Gomez was among the miners who were trapped under the earth for a full 69 days.

The rescue mission lasted just over a day, ending last night (13th). As the last man- Luis Urzua- was pulled out the whole nation seemed to sigh in relief at this ordeal ending in joy rather than in heartache. Urzua, the shift foreman of the miners who were buried, emerged as the leader of those who were trapped. It was he who divided up the tuna cans that were buried along with them so that the miners would not starve, he who first established contact with the outside world 17 days after the mine collapsed. Urzua was the one who assisted the helpers in the outside world determine their exact location and thereby help the rescue attempt, and finally when the time came for the men to be rescued, it was he who insisted that he be taken out last, knowing full well the risk of doing so.
