Part 02

(Colombo Lankapuvath) Noon was approaching as we were closing on our destinations and it was at that point we encountered the bear having his meals. With utmost care not to disturb the creature, as we were well aware of the wild behavioral patterns of the beast, turned and took another path.

Creeping further into the density of the forest our hunger also grew. The lack of sun rays made us realize that we were now in the deep thick jungles, fear was never felt as we marched forward to reach our destination. As we looked up the skies we only saw the thick cover of majestic growth of trees giving us a feeling we were inside the stomach of the forest itself.

Hunger struck us again making it impossible for us to continue our journey so we spent a few minutes to jus swallow up our meal for the noon. Just as we started our journey further into the thick jungles, we came across an open area with very few trees. From its appearance it implied that this may have been a land where an ancient construction stood. Stone pillars were to be seen at each point of the area where we took some time to examine and study them and then on we were on the forward march once more.

Dusk was setting in when our water vessels were drying too. “Water” seemed a mirage in these thick jungle tides, when we vaguely came across some water.

However, the water was not at all in a state to be consumed, but we were left with no option but to fill our empty bottles and marched on in search of a place where we could lie down for the night.

A granite surface or a sort of a rock which appeared to be as if it was brought from another location and set up there was visible to us. It was difficult for us to reach its top but we had to prepare our small meal there. Closing my eyes, I could imagine our ancestors lying in these thick granites and resting. Lying there and looking up at the sky, gave a sense of solace and made me realize how simple it might have been to lie down there, away from all the complicated issues of society.

Pin drop silence spread across the jungles as I lay there on the granite away from the cement world cuddling nature. I could feel the cold breeze kiss my cheeks and hum a little jingle in my ear.

The crickets echoed in my ear, giving a pleasant soothing feeling to my heart “So this is how our ancestors felt and lived” I thought for myself before I shut my eyes and slept the night away.

The silence broke as we heard a large noise coming from far ahead. With the noises beginning to more clearer we knew that the elephant was nearing our area and the sound of its foots steps, was not friendly at all. Anxiety crept into my mind surrounded by fear….
