(Colombo-Lankapuvath) Police called in the riot squads to quell the rising violence at UNP Headquarters a short while ago following the victory and re-election of Ranil Wickremesinghe as UNP leader.
Wickremesinghe in a secret ballot beat his rival,deputy leader,Karu Jayasuriya by a majority of 40 votes.Ranil polled 66 against Jayasuriya's 26 votes.
However, Sajith Premadasa beat Ravi Karunayake by 8 votes to be elected deputy leader while Daya Gamage beat Dayasiri Jayasekere by 20 votes to become the National Organizer.
Roads from Atul Kotte-Pita Kotte Junctions remained closed for traffic as violence inside Siri Kotha continued with crowds opposed to Ranil pelting stones and damaging vehicles.
