(Colombo, Lankapuvath) - The Embassy of Japan in collaboration with the University of Peradeniya will present a Japanese “Yosakoi Dance”, on Thursday August 25 at the E.O.E. Pereira Theatre, University of Peradeniya, (Faculty of Engineering) followed by another performance in Colombo on Saturday August 27 at the New Town Hall auditorium.

The “Yosakoi Dance” will feature “Hokuto-gumi”, which is an elite unit of Team Yamabiko, a Yosakoi dancing team which mainly performs at Kobe, Japan.  ‘Yosakoi’ (which means “Come at night) is a unique style of dance which originated in Japan in the city of Kōchi in 1954, as a modern rendition of Awa Odori, a traditional summer dance. The style of dance is highly energetic, combining traditional Japanese dance movements to modern music.

The Japanese dance performances are part of the cultural events marked for the Japanese Cultural Month in August, which has been organized with a view to further enhancing the friendly relations between the peoples of Japan and Sri Lanka. Admission to both these performances will be free of charge to the general public on a first come first served basis.
