(Colombo Lankapuvath January 20) – The memorandum of understanding for the second phase of country’s first ever grid connected large scale solar park to set up in Mirijjawila, in the Hambantota District, was signed today.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Korean and Sri Lankan Governments to construct the 500kv solar power park. Under the first phase, a MoU was signed, between the Japanese and the Sri Lankan governments to construct the 400 kv solar park at the same location. With the completion of both phases the park would have the full generation capacity of one mega watt of electricity, which will be connected to the national grid.

“The CEB will purchase the electricity and payments received by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) will be utilized to provide houses in the remotest villages where the grid connection could not be reached, with solar PV panels.

The project is completed, it could be used as a model for solar power technology, a facility for the local researchers and it would encourage foreigners to invest in such projects in the country.
