(Colombo Lankapuvath June 24) In comparison with the year 2007, the production of local liquor shows a slight decrease in 2008 stated Finance and State Revenue Minister Ranjith Siyabalapitiya in Parliament yesterday (23).
"A total number of 50,087,293.73 litres of arrack produced locally in 2007 had been reduced to 45,910,161.38 litres by 2008 mentioned the Minister.
Importing foreign liquor has also dropped in 2006 in comparing with the year 2005. The amount of imported liquor was 1,311,734.000 litres while in 2006 the figure was 1,270,643.000 litres.
The Government has not issued any liquor licence to open new liquor shops abs all possible measures have been taken by the Government to stop the production if illicit liquor. These measures are taken in keeping with the "Mathata Thitha Programe" stated the Minister.
Although the consumption of liquor cannot completely be stopped at once, the "Mathata Thitha Programe" has been successfully implemented by the Government of Sri Lanka to prevent the mass consumption of liquor in the country.
Tax on foreign liquor was not increased with intention of increasing the annual tax revenue of the Government but to decrease the amount of liquor being imported.
