(Colombo Lankapuvath March 14) The “Battle of the Maroons” of the hill capital will commenced yesterday (13) at the Asgiriya International Stadium in Kandy.
The match which is played on the 13th and 14th is the 103rd big match played between Kingswood College and Dharmaraja College Kandy.
The first match between the Kingswoodians and the Rajans were played in the year 1893 at the Bogambara Stadium. Dharmaraja College leads the series with 31 wins against 19 by Kingswood College with 52 matches ending in draws.The Rajans won the last match in the year 1980 under Janaka Mendis at Police grounds whereas the Kingswoodians last win was recorded in the year 1958.
Dharmaraja Skipper Pratap de Silva won the toss and invited the Kingswood skipper Chalitha Dharmaprema to bat first. The match was declared due to heavy rains while the Kingswood players put up a score of 211 runs for the fall of 09 wickets by the end of the day’s play.
Kingswood’s opening batsman Yasindu Athukorale was dismissed for 09 runs while Vice Captain Ashan Seneviratne of the team played 53 runs.
Tharindu Dandeniya took 02 wickets and Rahula Ekanayake took 04 wickets. Buwaneka Ekanayake, brother of Rahula held 03 catches.
The 103rd “Battle of the Maroons” of the hill Capital will continue today (14) at the Asgiriya International Stadium in Kandy.
